You can talk as much as you like. Action speak louder than words.
This one boxing match (Adrian Broner vs Marcos Maidana) had me excited. I was going for the underdog. Personally I saw lack of skill in Adrian where he could not handle pressure. From a boxing point of view, he tried and he lost. The better man won.
Before the fight, you could see the character of Adrian, very cocky, brash and arrogant (to sell tickets and gain popularity). On the other side his opponent, who spoke little English, sat quietly but known to possess heavy hands. A guy who would be considered the underdog before the fight. When the fight took place, the underdog jumped on the guy expected to win with all he had, defeated him so badly that he walked out of the arena not participating in the usual post fight interview. Both fights deserve respect for stepping in the ring regardless.
This boxing match and the character reminds me of humility. How often can we talk but can't back it up. How often do we think we are better when in fact we are not. Can we take defeat. In this case, Adrian can eat humble pie, accept his loss, change and do better, there is nothing stopping him. For us being muslim we also have to become humble, in our actions and speech. We should not think we are better than everyone else. There is something I am learning today, here is the quote from the Quran.
Before thee We sent messengers to many nations, and We afflicted the nations with suffering and adversity, that they call Allah in humility. When the suffering reached them from Us, why then did they not call Allah in humility? On the contrary, their hearts became hardened, and Satan made their sinful acts seem alluring to them. (Al-Anaam 6:42-43)
When we in life suffer from calmity, we should always call upon Allah. Of course calling upon Allah should be at all times, good times and bad times in our lives regardless. Perhaps the boxing match is a bad example of this, but we can give many examples of people in our society, perhaps us ourselves us true to this in our past of saying things in excess where we could not back it up. It also reminds me that we should talk when necessary. Talking at the right times is also crucial.
Portion from the hadith:
Abû Hurayrah relates that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his neighbor. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his guest.” [ Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim ]
Here is a link that talks about this:
Now to wrap this article up...I can learn that being humble is also to talk when necessary as Allah SWT wants us. Suppose I was Adrian Broner, spoke in excess before the fight then lost, that is far worse and a hit on my pride than if I was humble from the start. Humble people should all accept defeat. I myself has to accept defeat as this is a lesson for me before anyone.
